I would say that about four nights out of the week I have about ten minutes of *thinking* before I eventually fall asleep. Sometimes my thoughts are simply ‘I mustn’t forget to wear those sweatpants tomorrow’ and sometimes they’re actually creative ideas.
A ton of YouTube videos I’ve watched about productivity and night routines and all that stuff, tell me that I should keep a notebook by my bedside so I can write this genius down for posterity.
And then – I was told to keep a writer’s notebook when I took Creative Writing in University – and so I did. And this notebook lived with me, I wrote about my walks, my dreams, my thoughts – even those ones when I’m about to fall asleep.
And you know what I discovered? Aside from being unable to read my own handwriting – my evening thoughts are actual rubbish. Practically incoherent, they read self-indulgent and like teenage philosophy.
I need to remind myself of this, because I still find myself thinking these things in the evening and being tempted to keep this magical ‘evening thoughts’ notebook once again.
No, my dear. You are a morning writer. This is the way of the world.
Until next time x
