So…I skipped a week. Whoops. Mental Health, am I right?
Anyway, I’m back baby, and I’m excited. The brain is conjuring up a whole pot full of discussion topics, and I can’t wait to get into them.
The first thing that came to my mind recently was a subject I had in school that had so much potential. Life Orientation. Sounds pretty dope, even necessary, but think again. The entire subject seemed to revolve around South Africa’s newly found, highly coveted, Bill of Rights.
Lemme tell you that no innovation can be found in this bill, freedom of speech is not as revolutionary as my tenth-grade teacher tried to tell us. We get it. We are free humans. Now teach us how to be humans please.
But that never happened, unless you count the beep-test teaching me failure and pain, Life Orientation(which also encompassed PE, for some reason) never taught me a damn thing about adulthood.
And one thing I would love to have been better at was conversations, arguments, fights. I’m pretty good at arguing, don’t get me wrong, but that’s not really what I’m after.
I want to know why it had to take heartbreak and failure to teach me how to have a real conversation? To teach me how to stick up for myself while still holding love and empathy for the other person?
Teach that in school, for heaven’s sake.
Still no? Okay. I’ll do the schooling I suppose. Catch it on my latest podcast episode, or search for The Confused 22 Podcast on Spotify, Deezer, Podchaser or Podcast Addict.
